But amid the everyday hustle and bustle of odd jobs and acting careers, friends and politics, vinyl and Super 8, more intense feelings emerge over time …

In LICORICE PIZZA, Paul Thomas Anderson not only tells the story of an extraordinary love and the upsetting and confusing time of growing up, but also takes the audience on an atmospheric journey back to the seventies – and into a life between bell-bottoms and the oil price crisis, New Hollywood and Motown.

In front of the camera, two shooting stars thrill in their grand acting debut: Cooper Hoffman, son of the late acting legend Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Grammy-nominated musician Alana Haim from the sister band Haim, whom Anderson has already accompanied in several short documentaries and who can also be seen in front of the camera as family in LICORICE PIZZA.

She is joined by a stellar cast including eight-time Oscar® and three-time Golden Globe nominee Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings, A Star is Born), two-time Oscar® winner Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River), Emmy-winning comedienne Maya Rudolph (Bride Alarm) and multi-Grammy-winning cult musician Tom Waits (Down By Law).

Sommer 1973 in Südkalifornien: Der 15-jährige Gary tut sich mit der zehn Jahre älteren Alana zusammen, um Wasserbetten zu verkaufen. Er braucht sie als Fahrerin. So kurven die beiden so verschiedenen Menschen frohen Mutes durch die Gegend oder rennen aneinander vorbei und geraten von einer skurrilen und kuriosen Situation zur nächsten.
