Das Kunsthaus Hamburg zeigt europaweit die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Goutam Ghosh. In seiner Malerei greift er unterschiedliche Einflüsse aus Disziplinen wie Religion, Magie, Geologie, Archäologie, Musik und Mathematik auf. Die detailreichen, gestischen, manchmal zeichenhaften Malereien bewegen sich in einem Bezugsfeld von traditionellen indischen Philosophien und der rational geprägten Wissenschaft. Mit seiner eigenständigen und poetischen Bildsprache verweist Ghosh auf die Abhängigkeit des menschlichen Erkenntnisprozesses von quantifizierbaren Daten und Mustern, die er in seinen Arbeiten mit filigranen, amorphen oder animistischen Formen verknüpft. Abstraktion und Gegenständlichkeit stehen dabei in einer wechselseitigen Beziehung.

Goutam Ghosh (*1979, Nabadwip, Indien) lebt und arbeitet in Santiniketan, Indien. Er studierte an der Academy of Fine Arts, Oslo sowie an der Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, Baroda in Indien. Er hatte Einzelausstellungen bei STANDARD (OSLO), Oslo (2018/15) und Project 88, Mumbai (2017) und war in internationalen Gruppenausstellungen vertreten: u. a. David Zwirner Gallery, London (2017); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2017); The Renaissance Society, Chicago (2016); Jhaveri Contemporary, Mumbai (2016); Galleria Raucci/Santamaria, Neapel (2015).

Die Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung hat Goutam Ghosh im Rahmen ihres Förderprogramms „Kataloge für junge Künstler“ ausgezeichnet und ermöglicht damit das Ausstellungsvorhaben sowie die Produktion eines begleitenden Kataloges.

The Kunsthaus Hamburg is pleased to present the artist Goutam Ghosh’s first institutional solo exhibition in Europe. His paintings are informed by a variety of disciplines including religion, magic, geology, music, and mathematics. Ghosh’s gestural, detailed and at times sign-like paintings navigate the different influences of traditional Indian philosophies and rational sciences. With his autonomous and poetic imagery he points to the dependency of the human process of cognition on quantifiable data and patterns that are combined with filigree, amorphous or animistic forms in his works – abstraction mutually correlating with figurativeness.
