APPEARANCE – Decolonising Fashion

We will be celebrating our APPEARANCE Event during the 23 – 25 September 2022 in Hamburg. Our event explores how colonialism, racism and capitalism interact in fashion through a discursive, performative and artistic programme. The focus is on a critical engagement with fashion’s colonial past, coloniality and its continuities in our present.

For this reason, we mainly want to present marginalised positions of BIPoC as well as „fashion“ practices from the Global South, e.g. through performance installations/workshops/exhibitions. While highlighting „alternative“ views, we also discuss contemporary issues related to these practices in the here and now. We will look at the existing structures through a decolonial and power-critical lens
and discuss the implications and relations of knowledge through art and fashion. What does it need to deconstruct fashion?

Designers from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Uganda and more will be part. Stay tuned and watch the space!
